Black Olive is a Mediterranean restaurant in Capitol Commons, Pasig City, serving mainly Italian cuisine as well as Western and Spanish inspired dishes created by Chef Carlo Miguel. We first visited Black Olive back in December 2013 for a late night booze over pizza and burger. Just recently, we were invited by the restaurant for lunch to sample their new offerings.

Out to Lunch is Black Olive's new lunch menu launched last March 2014 featuring six new dishes. It is designed to match the on-the-go lifestyle of cosmopolitan Ortigas without losing the gourmet touch to the dining experience. Every dish comes with a choice of soup-of-the-day or dessert-of-the day plus your choice of iced tea.

It was 1:00pm when I arrived at the restaurant. Since my work shift will start at 3:00pm and will have to travel all the way to McKinley Hill, I need something quick yet filling. From the menu, I spotted the Tagliata and instantly felt like having steak for lunch. At first, I was hesitant to order it thinking that it would take a while to prepare it, but despite the limited time I had, I ordered it anyway.

While waiting for my steak, I was served with complimentary freshly baked bread with spiced olive oil. I was surprised to find out that my steak is served with my choice of soup-of-the-day or dessert-of-the-day. I chose the soup-of-the-day and shortly after, I was served with a huge bowl of Lentil Soup.

The soup was very rich in flavor. I particularly love the spices used in the soup. The flavors are well balanced and none of the spices used was overpowering. I enjoyed dipping small pieces of my bread into the soup. It actually kept me occupied for a while but really enjoyed every moment with my soup.
Tagliata with Arugula |
Finally, my Tagliata is served. The blade steak was perfectly grilled the way I like it, well-done. The steak was topped with herbs and chili flakes. The spiciness was just right so not to overpower the flavors of the steak. It was served with balsamico gravy, giving this dish an Italian touch.

The Tagliata was also served with fresh Arugula Leaves and a side of Parmesan Frites. I cut small strips of the steak and wrapped it in an arugula leaf. I particularly loved the arugula because it gave a interesting and refreshing nutty flavor to the steak. The Parmesan Frites were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside but melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside.

I was also surprised to meet a high school classmate of mine now working as a chef at Black Olive. It was indeed a small world. Chef Dennis and I had a quick chat, we spoke about food and travel. It was fun catching up with Chef Dennis and exchanging travel plans.

It was 2:15pm when I finished my lunch, just the right time to leave for work. I totally enjoyed my quick lunch at Black Olive. Great ambiance, uncomplicated menu, quick service and superb food. I will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. Chef Dennis recommended the Crispy Peri Peri Chicken Burger, I would probably try that one on my next visit.
Out to Lunch is available everyday from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Choices include Spicy Shrimp Spaghetti Aglio Olio, Tagliata with Arugula, Crispy Peri Peri Chicken Burger, Pasta Primavera, Pork Parmigiana, and Meatball Calzone. Click the menu below for more details.
